DESCRIPTION:Each year, nationally recognized leaders in medical, procedural
 , and aesthetic medicine convene in Santa Barbara to discuss and review th
 e current state of knowledge in their respective dermatologic specialties.
  This program in medical dermatology features key clinical topics, includi
 ng atopic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, cutaneous cancers, rosacea, psoriasis
 , and other important issues. Aesthetic medicine continues to be a growing
  specialty in the milieu of the aging American population and medical cons
 umers’ ever-increasing desire to achieve the best possible quality of li

 AD   \n\nDr. April Armstrong is Professor and Chief of Dermatology at Un
 iversity of California Los Angeles (UCLA). She is an internationally renow
 ned dermatologist and clinical researcher in inflammatory skin diseases in
 cluding psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and HS.\n\nDr. Armstrong obtained he
 r medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed dermatology res
 idency at Harvard. She also obtained a Master of Public Health degree from
  Harvard School of Public Health. Prior to being the Chief of Dermatology 
 at UCLA, Dr. Armstrong served as Associate Dean for Clinical Research at t
 he University of Southern California (USC), where she led initiatives to i
 mprove research infrastructure and streamline processes to provide an effi
 cient environment for research. She also served as Vice Chair in the Depar
 tment of Dermatology at USC, as well as at the University of California Da
 vis and University of Colorado previously.\n\nDr. Armstrong is a federally
  funded investigator whose research focuses on (1) evaluating novel system
 ic and topical therapies for inflammatory skin diseases, (2) identifying t
 reatment goals and comorbidities associated with skin diseases, and (3) in
 creasing patient access using innovative, technology-enabled healthcare de
 livery methods. Dr. Armstrong has conducted over 150 clinical trials and p
 ublished over 500 articles in scientific journals.\n\nDr. Armstrong has a 
 long history of service to the medical profession on a national and intern
 ational level. She serves as a board member of the American Academy of Der
 matology, immediate Past Chair of the Medical Board at the National Psoria
 sis Foundation, Co-President of the Group for Research and Assessment of P
 soriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA), councilor for the International
  Eczema Council and International Psoriasis Council, and a board member fo
 r the International Dermatology Outcome Measures and the California Societ
 y of Dermatology and Dermatological Surgery (CalDerm). She is also an edit
 orial board member of JAMA Dermatology and had also served on the editoria
 l boards of JAAD and other journals. Dr. Armstrong is past President of th
 e American DermatoEpidemiology Network and Sacramento Valley Dermatology S
 ociety.\n\nDr. Armstrong is also a passionate educator, having mentored nu
 merous medical students, residents, and postdoctoral research fellows. She
  has received institutional and national teaching awards for her education
 al efforts.\n\nNeal Bhatia, MD \n\nDr. Neal Bhatia is a board-certified d
 ermatologist in San Diego, California.  He serves as Director of Clinical
  Dermatology at Therapeutics Clinical Research and as chief medical editor
  for Practical Dermatology.  He is widely published and has a background 
 in immunology as well as interests in mechanisms of therapy, skin cancer, 
 and medical dermatology\n\nMichael Heffernan, MD \n\nDr. Heffernan is an 
 internationally recognized complex medical dermatologist and clinical tria
 list. After serving as the  founding chair of Dermatology at the Wright S
 tate University Boonshoft School of Medicine he served as a Distinguished 
  Medical Fellow for Eli Lilly & Co. He is now the co-owner of San Luis De
 rmatology & Laser Clinic and he is the US  Dermatology Lead for Probity M
 edical Research. Dr. Heffernan has published over 80 peer reviewed article
 s and  textbook chapters. He has been the principle investigator for near
 ly 150 research studies and he has provided over 500  invited lectures ar
 ound the globe \n\n \n\nLearning Objectives\nAs a result of participatin
 g in this activity, the participants will be able to:\n1. Discuss new appr
 oaches to therapy including pathway targeted therapy in the treatment of m
 elanoma.\n2. Assess the role of diagnostic tools and technology in diagnos
 is and detection of skin cancers.\n3. Compare and contrast the efficacy an
 d safety of agents, devices, and techniques currently available in aesthet
 ic and procedural dermatology.\n4. Integrate into daily practice evidence-
 based recommendations on new and emerging therapies for common dermatologi
 c diseases.\n5. Analyze treatment approaches for the pediatric patient wit
 h common as well as complex skin diseases.\n6. Implement updated strategie
 s for managing acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and ps
 oriasis.\n7. Recognize the factors that are important in selecting appropr
 iate filler agents for treating different areas of the face and targeted p
 lanar depths.\n8. Determine the appropriate nonsurgical techniques for fac
 ial rejuvenation based on an enhanced understanding of facial anatomy.\n9.
  Explain the roles of currently available biologic agents in the treatment
  of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, and appropriately incorporate newer
  biologics into therapeutic practice as these become available.\n10. Incor
 porate the recent research advances in understanding and treating pediatri
 c dermatology issues such as atopic dermatitis and pediatric acne.\n\nCont
